However, the truth isn’t nearly as clear as we’ve been led to believe. 

A growing body of research suggests that fluoride’s negative health effects may far overwhelm any potential cavity prevention this additive can provide. From thyroid dysfunction to cognitive impairment, fluoride could be silently wreaking havoc within your body.

How Did Fluoride Become the Dental Hygiene “Golden Standard”?

I know what you’re thinking: If fluoride really is so dangerous, how did it become so popular? That’s a fair question. You might be skeptical to cut back on fluoride when every government agency and name brand toothpaste company considers it a miracle worker. We can only find the truth by going back to the very beginning. 

Fluoride is a trace mineral derived from fluorine, one of the world’s most abundant elements. It exists naturally in the air, water, and soil all around us. However, fluoride wasn’t purposefully utilized by humans until the 20th century.

Beginning in 1901, some dentists started to notice an inexplicable trend: their patients’ teeth, though marked by unsightly brown enamel stains, were less vulnerable to cavities. 

A few of these dentists performed their own fieldwork and concluded that high levels of fluoride in local water supplies were responsible for their patients’ mottled enamel.

This condition of mottled enamel was renamed “fluorosis”. From 1931 to 1942, the Dental Hygiene Unit of the National Institute of Health investigated the potential link between fluoride and cavity prevention. 

Public health officials who gathered data from the cities involved in the earliest fluoridation initiatives believed they could prove a direct correlation between fluoridated water and reduction in dental caries.

This immediately created a wild rush as cities across the country sought to add this “magical” fluoride to municipal water systems. It didn’t take long for toothpaste manufacturers to capitalize on fluoride’s popularity by adding it into their formulas. 

Fast forward over 50 years later. Community water fluoridation has caused major controversy over the years, but more than 75% of our water supply is purposefully fluoridated and 99% of commercial toothpaste brands boast high fluoride content.

Flashy Fluoride For Children?

Crest became the first toothpaste to add fluoride to its formulation in the 1950s. Since then, it has become standard practice to infuse toothpaste products with fluoride. But just like fluoridated water, these toxic fluoride toothpastes are marketed as beneficial and essential to strong dental health. 

A quick look at traditional children’s toothpaste tells you everything you need to know. Toothpaste brands use aggressive marketing tactics to attract young children, including pictures of food items and animated characters. Any warnings regarding the dangers of fluoride overconsumption are hidden in small print on the back of the box or tube.  

Children’s toothpastes contain 1,000 parts per million of fluoride or more, which is equal to the amounts in most adult toothpastes. This is why the warning label states that children should only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and spit it out after brushing. 

So in the same breath, the ADA, CDC, FDA, and other organizations claim fluoride is critical for strong oral health, then warn us of the detrimental effects of consuming the exact fluoride additive they advocate. 

Fluoride can’t possibly be as safe as these organizations insist if every tube of children’s toothpaste must read, “Keep out of reach of children under six years of age. If more than the recommended usage for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or a contact poison control center right away.” 

Let’s be real. A four-year-old is going to lay eyes on a bubble-gum flavored tube of Minion paste and immediately sneak a taste. A three-year-old isn’t going to stop to ask permission before eating fluoride toothpaste like jelly. Why are we exposing our children to something so risky?

How to Do a Fluoride Detox

The widespread use of fluoride in our public water and toothpaste is like a swaying Jenga tower… eventually, indisputable research will pull out so many blocks that the tower will collapse.

You don’t need to wait until the CDC acknowledges fluoride’s true dangers to detox your body from this toxin. A fluoride detox is surprisingly quick and easy, and the benefits make it well worth your time!

Step 1: Stop Drinking Fluoridated Water

Most of us drink fluoridated water without a second thought. The process of fluoridation is invisible to us, and we trust the EPA and municipal water companies to keep our drinking water clean and safe. Unfortunately, they don’t deserve our full trust. 

Brace yourself, because I’m about to pull back the curtain and expose the real process of water fluoridation. By the time I’m done, you’ll be running to the store for fluoride filters without even taking the time to put on your shoes. 

Fluoride isn’t added to water in its naturally occurring form of calcium fluoride. Since calcium fluoride can’t be absorbed by the body, the government uses fluorosilicic acid instead. You might be interested to know the history of FSA, which somehow was rebranded from “industrial toxic waste” to “dental health additive” in the mid-1900s. 

In places like central Florida, where enormous phosphate deposits are mined to make synthetic fertilizer, highly toxic substances like hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetrafluoride accumulate as the resulting byproducts.

Manufacturers use specialized technologies to convert these toxic vapors into fluorosilicic acid (FSA). This compound is just as dangerous as hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetrafluoride, but it’s easier for manufacturers to store and transport.

The CDC confirms that about 90% of public water sources in America are fluoridated using FSA. Yet research shows that FSA is corrosive and causes dire health complications when inhaled or touched.

In fact, when a tanker truck spilled 4500 gallons of FSA on a highway near Deltona, Florida, more than 2,000 people had to evacuate their homes and 50 people were hospitalized. This is the same chemical that is drip-fed into our water supplies every day!

If you’re serious about removing fluoride from your drinking water, be strategic and think out of the box. Normal carbon filters — like those sold by Brita — don’t filter fluoride at all. Boiling water doesn’t help either. Your only real option is to purchase a filter purposefully designed to remove all fluoride from water.
