How to Boost Your Natural Immune System And Stay Healthy During Cold and Flu Season

We live in a scary time. Fear of not knowing what is happening now and in the future is real.  Accepting that is the first step.

Acknowledging fear will help you move past it and get to the solutions that will keep you thriving and succeeding every single day.

If you do not acknowledge your feelings, fear leads to anxiety. Anxiety leads to increased cortisol.  Cortisol is your stress hormone that turns on inflammation in your body which leads to a weakened immune system.

I can’t remove the fear or unknown. But I can set you up for the best defense against disease, illness, and stress.

I’m a mom, and just like you, my first concern is my family. More specifically, my kids. I don’t want my kids to become sick with the cold, flu or any virus!

Cold and flu season is always is a real concern but with some planning, you can reduce the chances of yourself, or your family, becoming sick if you are exposed.

In this blog post, I am going to teach you how to protect yourself and your family from getting sick from any airborne virus. As a nurse, your health is my priority. Prevention is key and education will arm you and your immune system with barriers!

How to Protect Yourself (And Your Family) By Boosting Your Immune System

There are only FOUR ways the bacteria and viruses can enter your body – through your nose, mouth, eyes or dry, cracked skin (hands). You will breathe it in or place it in your mouth or eyes with contaminated fingers, utensils, or food.  Or, because of frequent hand washing and the use of alcohol-based sanitizers, hand and cuticles become extremely dry and cracked.  Often to the point of bleeding and pain.  This is an easy entry for any virus or bacteria.

The first way to prevent bodily contamination is to make sure you wash your hands frequently and prevent dry, cracked skin in the process. Let's face it, the more often you wash your hands, the more likely for your skin to become dry, cracked, itchy and broken.

Wash Your Hands – The Right Way!

Let’s revisit how to effectively wash your hands. First, remove your rings at least once a day and wash without rings.  Rings can harbor bacteria and viruses underneath and on your skin.

Here are 6 easy steps to clean hands:

  1. Get your hands wet and soapy. Wet your hands in clean water. Put soap on your hands and make suds.
  2. Rub. Rub, rub your soapy hands together long enough to sing “Happy Birthday” in your head twice or sing the alphabet slowly. Remember, it’s more about the rubbing and friction of your hands than it is about the soap. If you do not have soap, you can effectively clean your hands with just water… and rub, rub, rub to create friction! Clean your palms, the back of your hands, and between your fingers. Don’t forget to clean under your nails. Nails can trap dirt and germs.
  3. Rinse. Hold your hands under clean, running water with fingers pointed down — this prevents water from running up your arm. Rub them to rinse them fully.
  4. Shake and dry. Shake your hands a few times, then dry them with a clean towel or hand dryer.
  5. Apply Hand Balm with protective essential oils. This will protect your hands (and your kids) by keeping your healthy bacteria present and prevents dry, chaffed skin which can be a portal of entry for bacteria and viruses. The Hand-it-izer Protective Balm contains essential oils known to have antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties including thymol, ravensara, citronella, rosemary, geranium, clove and more.  It was originally made for Operating Room staff and nurses who wash their hands frequently and need protection from bacteria and contamination. It absorbs into your skin and provides protection for 4-6 hand washes. Reapply as often as needed.
  6. Spray hands before eating or when in public with a witch hazel based sanitizing/cleaning hand spray which contains thymol, ravensara, geranium, peppermint and clove for best protection against germ transmission.

What to avoid:

  • Antibacterial soaps. Antibacterial soaps spread antibiotic resistance. (Also, bars of soap sitting in water have been shown to be contaminated with bacteria, so only use soap that is drained properly.)
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizers. These can dry out your hands and cause cracks, dry patches, itchiness that can lead to open areas and destroys your barrier against infections. The alcohols will also kill all of your good skin microbiomes which are needed to protect you against harmful bacteria.  Instead, use witch hazel based-sprays with essential oils to prevent germ transfer.

Protect Your Dental Health and Shut Your Front Door

Your mouth is your front door. Open wide and exposure to bacteria, viruses and fungus are all around. Once inside your mouth… the party begins. Your mouth is connected to your nose and sinuses. The bacterial or viral party inside your mouth travels to your nose and mouth causing frequent sinus infections and cold/flu infestations.

My goal is to protect your health by supporting your saliva, the body secretion that no one is talking about but directly impacts your health!

By the way, as a mom, keeping my kid's mouth healthy had kept them more resistant to the cold and flu virus... bonus!

Let’s look inside your mouth…

Inside your mouth are the telltale signs that trouble is brewing and if you are exposed to a virus, it will infect you. The place to destroy the bacteria and virus is inside your mouth. Your saliva contains anti-viral, antibacterial, antimicrobial proteins which, along with a healthy oral microbiome, should prevent harmful viruses and bacteria from infesting your body.

Your mouth is not Vegas!  What happens inside your mouth does not stay in your mouth... it travels everywhere in your body!

Your mouth is connected to your nose, sinuses, lungs and gut.  If the bacteria inside your mouth is not healthy, and you suffer from frequent sinus infections and colds, it's likely that your mouth is the culprit making you sick.

In truth, if your gatekeeper is healthy, the virus should not get beyond your front door!

The REAL problem with most dental products: They are creating more acids inside your mouth.  Acid dissolves enamel, makes your saliva inactive and  it grows disease causing bacteria. By destroying the environment inside the mouth, you are at increased risk of internal inflammation, a weakened immune system and internal health issues. Acids from foods support unhealthy bacteria and prevent your saliva from protecting you.

How do you know if your mouth will protect you or make you sick? Read the signs.

Signs your mouth is in trouble:

  • Red and tender gums? Inflamed and bleeding gums are an open door for bacteria and viruses to travel directly into the bloodstream for internal invasion. Strong health gums are a strong defense against internal invasion.
  • Bad Breath? This signals you have an overgrowth of the bad bacteria… which creates acids to support their survival. Exposure to viruses, sugary food, alcohol-based mouthwashes, peroxide and other harsh toothpaste ingredients can increase acidity in the mouth, strengthen the infestation and weaken your immunity and defense.
  • Plaque buildup? Proof your mouth environment supports the wrong microbiome.
  • Tongue coated with white? Bacteria and acids are coating your tongue, strengthening the virus, and destroying your immune system.
  • Dry mouth? Your saliva is what protects your mouth 24 hours a day. It contains all the essentials to protect your entire mouth and your immune system: digestive enzymes, immune proteins, minerals, and acid-neutralizing properties. Less than optimal saliva creates a weakness in your defense against viral invasion.

The best defense against infections, including the common cold and flu virus, is a healthy mouth with healthy saliva production.

You should develop the healthy habit of brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day. However, brushing with the wrong products can make you sick by destroying your natural protection your mouth was designed to offer and leaves your front door wide open!

Brush Your Teeth with the Right Products

My Dental Protocol and Daily Routine support a healthy mouth microbiome and saliva protection. Dental products that will help prevent bacteria and viruses from surviving inside your mouth must be:

  1. Alkaline
  2. Mineral-rich (paste or powder)
  3. Detoxifying

Alkaline toothpaste or powder:

  • cleans teeth and gum tissue
  • supports the growth of healthy bacteria, reduces the risk of disease-causing viruses and bacteria
  • destroys plaque
  • allows minerals to go back into the enamel
  • enables your saliva to protect you 24-hours a day
  • supports gum health

Mineral-rich toothpaste or powder:

  • provides the minerals that are essential for strong, cavity resistant teeth
  • thickens the enamel for whiter teeth

Detoxifying with a blend of clay/charcoal:

  • removes toxins (such as heavy metals and bacteria) from the gum tissue and mouth tissue
  • dissolves plaque quickly
  • prevents plaque formation
  • removes surface stains and whitens teeth

Dirty Mouth Toothpowder and Toothpaste, along with our dental essentials (charcoal toothbrush, gum serum, dental floss, and tongue scraper) fulfill all three requirements for a healthy mouth and protects you against viral invasions. Most toothpaste (and powders), even natural brands, do not satisfy ALL three requirements and leave your mouth exposed and vulnerable to decay, bacteria overgrowth, gum disease, toxicity, and ultimately, viral infections.

PRO-TIP: Our LED Teeth Whitening Kit uses blue light to kill bacteria inside the mouth and red light to keep your gums healthy. I suggest doing 2-3 20-minute treatments a week to keep your mouth healthy and virus-resistant. Our ULTIMATE ORAL WELLNESS KIT includes the LED kit and our dental essentials.

Support Your Saliva

Your first line of defense against the bacteria and viruses lies inside your mouth. More specifically, in your saliva.

Saliva is the health drink for your teeth and mouth. The three pints produced by the salivary glands each day contain antibacterial and antiviral substances that protect teeth from cavities, your gums from disease and kills viruses and bacteria before it can invade your body. Saliva contains calcium and phosphorus that your teeth absorb. It also functions as an overall lubricant for the mouth, preventing food from sticking to your teeth and gums.

Saliva contains antibacterial and antiviral proteins to kill pathogens before they enter your body! This brings new meaning to the phrase “good health begins inside your mouth”!

Through the day, your mouth is detecting and analyzing viruses, bacteria, pollen, food, and toxins before they enter the rest of the body. This means your mouth is a war zone of good and bad bacteria. And if you have more bad (pathogenic) bacteria in your mouth than good, your immune system can be fatally compromised.

The secret to a healthy mouth is in your saliva. What you brush your teeth with makes a HUGE difference in how well your saliva can protect you. Brushing with the wrong products (triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, glycerin, artificial ingredients) can prevent your saliva from doing its job.

A healthy habit is to brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. But what about the other 23 hours and 50 minutes of every day? Have you ever wondered how your mouth stays healthy?

Saliva. The secret is out! Keep your saliva healthy and your mouth will be more resistant to cavities, gum disease, viruses, bacteria, and your internal health will also improve. Healthy saliva and a healthy mouth is the root cause of good health!!

Healthy saliva contains minerals, digestive enzymes (yes, digestion and immunity start inside your mouth), and antiviral/antibacterial proteins.

Here are a few suggestions for maintaining healthy saliva:

  1. Take your vitamins. If your body is mineral-depleted, your saliva will also be depleted of the minerals that keep your teeth healthy. To improve saliva production, see supplements below.
  2. Keep your gut healthy by taking probiotics. A healthy gut will absorb nutrients from supplements and foods instead of passing them through your body which will keep your saliva healthy.
  3. Avoid caffeine. Caffeinated beverages can be dehydrating. Studies have found that drinking caffeinated coffee or tea causes dry mouth.
  4. Limit alcohol use. Alcohol may dehydrate, which can contribute to dry mouth. When experiencing dry mouth, try drinking water instead of alcohol.
  5. Stop smoking. Smoking tobacco can also dehydrate. Cutting down or quitting may reduce dry mouth symptoms.
  6. Drop sugar. Like caffeine, alcohol, and smoking, sugar can dehydrate you. If you can, try cutting down on sugary foods and beverages (including kombucha) to reduce dry mouth problems.

If you suffer from dry mouth, here are some herbal remedies to stimulate saliva production. Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

  • Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis). The gel that the aloe vera plant leaves behind is moisturizing for the mouth. Aloe vera juice is a great way to treat dry mouth, drink 1 to 3 ounces of aloe juice or gel once a day.
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale). Ginger is a well-known herbal sialagogue. This means it helps stimulate saliva production, which also helps dry mouth.
  • Hollyhock root (Alcea spp.). Hollyhock has moisturizing action similar to aloe vera.
  • Marshmallow root (Malva spp.). Marshmallow root is an emollient and moisturizing plant like aloe. It’s popular in traditional herbalism. Take 2–5 mL of liquid marshmallow extract 3 times per day.
  • Nopal cactus (Opuntia spp.). Nopal cactus is a traditional food and medicine from Mexico. Also called prickly pear cactus, it’s gaining popularity in the health industry. Studies show nopal could improve dry mouth or hyposalivation. Nopal cactus’s health benefits can be obtained in several different ways. The most obvious way — which also offers the best health benefits — is by eating the cactus directly. You can also take supplements in capsule, powder, extract, and even liquid form. Most supplements typically recommend taking at least one dose of 500-650 milligrams on a daily basis.
  • Spilanthes (Spilanthes acmella). Spilanthes is a popular herb used for improving dental health. One traditional use is as a sialagogue for increasing salivation, which may help dry mouth. (Available in herbal extract).
  • Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum). According to a 2011 study, sweet peppers promote salivation. Eat raw, cooked, in smoothies and as often as you like!

By keeping your mouth healthy and your saliva flowing, you have a chance to prevent a viral invasion. The common cold and flu viruses are only a threat if your immune system is compromised. Since you now know your immune system starts inside your mouth, protect your gatekeeper with the right oral wellness protocol.

Boost Your Immune System

Boosting your immune system will help prevent you from getting sick when exposed to viruses that cause the common cold and flu.

And that can be as easy as changing the way you brush your teeth – seriously!

The Oral Biome is the front line of your immune system and if you’re using alcohol-based mouthwash or some other toxic sludge for your oral care, you’re at risk of harming the good bacteria that protect you against viruses.

The best way to protect your health is to brush your teeth twice a day. Make this a habit and watch your health improve drastically! Start with my 21-Day Oral Detox Kit!

Are you confused about when to brush, floss, scrape your tongue and apply the gum serum?

Morning Routine:

Do this first thing in the morning, before taking a sip of water, to detox your mouth of the toxins your body was cleansing while you slept.

  1. Scrape your tongue 3-4 swipes to remove the toxic garbage coating
  2. Brush with Dirty Mouth Toothpowder for TWO minutes (sing the alphabet slowly in your head) up and down (not side to side) to remove waste.
  3. Do not rinse your mouth – floss to move the powder between your teeth to detox your gums and remineralize between your teeth.
  4. Apply Dirty Mouth Gum Serum to your gums and mouth tissue.

Evening Routine:

Do this before bed to remove toxic waste and food remnants.

  1. Scrape your tongue 3-4 swipes to remove the toxic garbage coating
  2. Floss with our Activated Charcoal-bamboo floss BEFORE BRUSHING to detox between your teeth and remove the food buildup.
  3. Brush with Dirty Mouth Toothpowder for TWO minutes (sing the alphabet slowly in your head) up and down (not side to side) to remove waste.
  4. Apply Dirty Mouth Gum Serum to your gums and mouth tissue.

Support your immune system and protect your mouth! If you have been considering a teeth whitening system, now is the time. Our LED Teeth Whitening System is peroxide-free.

Peroxide is the main ingredient it whitening gels, strips, and dental teeth whitening procedures. Peroxide breaks down gum tissue and causes gum disease. This results in "leaky gums" and allows bacteria, viruses, and toxins to easily enter the bloodstream. Peroxide also destroys the healthy, protective bacteria inside your mouth and leaves you at risk of the overgrowth of the harmful bacteria. Lastly, peroxide harms the enamel of your teeth, weakening it over time. Instead, opt for a whitening system that skips the peroxide and uses LED light technology along with activated charcoal, oils, clays, and essential oils to whiten the teeth and help protect the gums.

Our LED Teeth whitening system will keep your mouth healthy, support your oral biome, and kill disease-causing bacteria while strengthening your gums from infection and your teeth from erosion.  To read how red and blue LED light can protect you from viruses, read this study.

A 20-minute treatment 3-4 times a week is my recommendation for keeping your mouth healthy.

SLEEP:  Is your sleep making you sick and fat?  Without sleep, your immune system will decline.

Every single bodily function, every beauty-attribute, relies on healing and regeneration.

Many natural sleep supplements are available and help you fall asleep, yet they do not support the important bodily functions that happen during sleep.  During sleep, your body goes into a catabolic state if nutrients are not available to maintain bodily functions.  During a catabolic state, you break down muscle and store fat for energy consumption.

Our SLEEP formulation with velvet antler, vitamin B6, colostrum, mucuna bean, and melatonin supports deep REM sleep, metabolism, tissue regeneration, and recovery and helps prevent the breakdown of muscle by supplying the nutrients, without the calories, for muscle growth and fat burning.

  • Deer velvet antler covers the growing bones and cartilage that develops into deer antlers.  Deer velvet is used to boost strength and endurance, improve the way the immune system works, counter the effects of stress, and promote rapid recovery from illness. It is also used at the onset of winter to ward off infections.
  • Bovine Colostrum is a great source of bio-identical growth hormone and IGF-I, which can be diminished without proper sleep.
  • Mucuna is a bean-like substance that is nature’s richest source of L-dopa, a precursor to dopamine. Dopamine is known to regulate sleep, mood, motivation, stress, motor skills, and a variety of other bodily functions. Mucuna does not create a negative feedback loop with dopamine production.

  •

  • Melatonin is a hormone created from serotonin by way of tryptophan. Melatonin regulates sleep cycles and induces REM sleep patterns. It is known to have a powerful antioxidant effect and increase the metabolic rate during sleep for weight loss. Melatonin plays a key role in healthy aging and immune response.
  • B-6 is a major coenzyme for many bodily functions and reactions. B-6 is known to increase the production of serotonin, which induces sleep, heightens mood, and improves mental cognition.

This is not a pill; it is non-habit forming and all-natural. It is a tincture that you squirt under your tongue for rapid absorption and utilization.  This is the best way to ensure the absorption of nutrients especially for those who might have digestive health issues.

Your body is supposed to produce melatonin naturally as an important signal for sleep. If you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, studies suggest that melatonin may be able to help. Melatonin is another key ingredient in our SLEEP. Naturally Supplement. Melatonin supplements are safe, natural, and easy to use.

Final Thoughts

Although there is no known cure for the common cold ad flu yet, we can all take steps to protect our health and the health of our loved ones. If you follow these suggestions to strengthen your immune system and boost your oral health, you can protect yourself against any airborne virus that may come your way.
