Red raspberry seed oil is the perfect spring time oil. As your time outside starts to increase, your skin will need added protection to build an natural defense against the hot, burning rays of summer. Red Raspberry Seed Oil offers this protection because it has a natural SPF of 28-50, and is one of the only natural oils that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. In fact, the SPF of Red Raspberry Seed Oil has been found to be equal to that of titanium dioxide, an ingredient commonly used in commercial sunscreens. It is high in anti-oxidants and has an anti-inflammatory effect; it can reduce the pain and inflammation associated with sunburn. It has been found to make abnormal skin cells self-terminate – essentially stopping potential tumors and cancers from getting established.

Kukui nut oil is an excellent botanical source of fatty acids and antioxidants, as well as Vitamins A,C and E.  It is easily absorbed by the deepest layers of the skin and forms a protective barrier that protects against environmental damage- perfect for introducing the skin to the great outdoors in the spring. Kukui nut oil has been used to treat sunburns, windburns, eczema, chapped skin, psoriasis, dry skin conditions, acne, scars, lesions and maturing skin. It is composed of 42 percent linoleic acid and 29 percent alpha-linolenic acid, which may help to heal certain skin conditions, while keeping the skin healthy and nourished.

Anise oil is a decongestant and helps detoxify the cells of the skin. Cells need to rid themselves of waste products in order to function properly. Anise is also a stimulant and will stimulate circulation. Anise oil is capable of keeping your skin healthy and lustrous and can provide instant relief from spots, acne and damaged skin. It helps your skin become soft, smooth and glowing.

Lemon oil has stimulating, detoxifying, astringent and antiseptic properties. Lemon oil provides natural tone, balance and rejuvenation within the skin and therefore is a good remedy for increasing the luster of dull skin. It is astringent and detoxifying in nature, and rejuvenates sagging or tired-looking skin. Its antiseptic properties help in treating acne breakouts and various skin disorders. Lemon is also recommended for reducing excessive oil on the skin.

Peppermint oil is rich in vitamins A and C, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals including potassium, manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, and copper. It is a stimulant and will increase circulation. Peppermint oil contains menthol, which is good for the skin because it creates a cooling sensation. Furthermore, it nourishes dull skin and improves the texture of oily or greasy skin. Peppermint is also an anti-inflammatory and will reduces swelling and inflammation.

Peppermint oil can be used externally in order to provide relief from pain. It is believed that the presence of calcium antagonism in peppermint oil helps remove pain from affected areas. It is also cooling in nature and is subsequently used to help reduce fever. It is frequently called a “refrigerant”, meaning that it can provide an intensely cold sensation to any affected area. In case of injury, wound, or healing process, topically apply peppermint oil to the area to reduce swelling, relieve pain, and eliminate the chances of uncomfortable inflammation.

Peppermint oil has a slight numbing effect on the skin, which may be why it is helpful for reducing skin irritations.

Fun fact about anise: Use star anise in tea to fight colds and flu viruses. For my ginger Wellness tea, click here.

Star anise is the primary source of shikimic acid, a plant-based compound that is the precursor to oseltamivir, an antiviral medication that is marketed as Tamiflu, according to an article in a 2011 issue of “Alternative Medicine Studies.” Although shikimic acid also occurs naturally in ginkgo and sweetgum fruit, star anise has far greater concentrations. Italian researchers tested shikimic acid alone and in combination with quercetin, an antioxidant-rich plant-based nutrient, to see if they could bolster immune function to help fight off flu or other viral infections. Although shikimic acid on its own had little or no effect on immune function, its combination with quercetin, even at low doses, appeared to help ramp up immune function to better resist viral infection. Researchers published their findings in the April 2008 issue of “Journal of Medical Virology.”
