The American Dental Association lists their Top 9 Foods that Damage Your Teeth that berates chewing on ice, eating excessive citrus, dried fruits or sticky foods (like trail mixes) that can stick to your teeth.

And that doesn’t include beverages. Coffee can both dry out your mouth and stain your teeth. Alcohol can cause dehydration and dry mouth, as well as a reduction in saliva over time.

Now… we all know that scare tactics can only go so far. So what healthy habits can improve your teeth?

Re-Mineralize. Acids in the foods we eat can remove the minerals in our enamel and lead to tooth decay. Remineralizing is when minerals are deposited back into tooth enamel. So, remineralizing’s the goal!

Get some calcium and phosphorous. Perfectly Paleo foods like chicken, leafy greens, and nuts can boost your calcium intake and protect teeth, as well as phosphorous-rich eggs and fish. Raw, grass-fed dairy (milk and cheese if they are in your diet) can neutralize acids in your mouth – an additional bonus. Make eating whole, unrefined foods a habit for your health and your teeth. Crisp apples and pears can sometime “scrape” disrupt plaque on your teeth. These types of fruit also have high levels of water, not just sugar.

Add Vitamin A. Fermented Cod Liver Oil is another at-home remedy for tooth decay. The Paleo Mama shares some great research on her post on cavities and tooth decay that suggests diets lacking in fat-soluble vitamins are the culprit of decay. She offers recommendations like eating high vitamin butter oil daily, using ghee and grass-fed butter in cooking, eating liver regularly, among others.

Mix with Water. If you can’t get to some Dirty Mouth Toothpowder soon after coffee, alcohol or the dried figs you just ate, rinse with water. Try to avoid sipping coffee or snacking all day, as you’ll just be continuously exposing your teeth to risky sugars and stains.

Banish Bacteria. Not many of us think about the level of acid in our mouths each day, but bacteria in our mouth and saliva cause tooth decay. Primal Life Organics toothpowder is naturally minty and made from a blend of clay that is rich in minerals to neutralize acids and remineralize your teeth – like silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous and more.
