Everything You Need to Know About Face Serums

August 30, 2018

If you don’t think taking care of the skin on your face is important, you’re mistaken. The skin is more susceptible to damage from the elements, sunlight and pollution. It’s also in danger of harsh chemicals and toxins found in skincare and cosmetics.

All-natural serums are a great way to protect your face. There are options for any skin type: dry, oily, combination, acne-prone and more.

Before you run out and buy the first thing you find, here are some basics that you’ll need to know about selecting the best skincare serum

Why use a face serum?

Do you know what your body’s largest organ is? Perhaps your liver… heart… brain… lungs…? Nope!

Your largest organ is hiding in plain sight… it’s your skin!

This important organ is exposed to all sorts of stressors. The sun’s rays and free radicals in the air are huge culprits of damage. Your skin is also subject to anything that gets smeared on it: lotions, cleansers, makeup and more.

Another factor of damage? Aging. It happens to everyone. As we get older, our skin loses its firmness and glow. The good news is that you can slow the aging process. Your face will keep its youthfulness with the right skincare products.

Face serum should be #1 on your list. Serums will help smooth your skin and make it more firm. It’ll help it stay hydrated and decrease the size of pores. You’ll have a young, fresh look in no time.

Serums are a concentrated blend of oils, so you might think they’ll be heavy and greasy. If you use them right, you’ll find the opposite to be true.

With face serums, a little goes a long way. They won’t clog your pores unless you put too much on. And since all-natural serums don’t contain petroleum or thick mineral oils, you won’t have to worry about breakouts or skin irritation.

The right face serum can take your skincare routine to the next level.

How do face serums work?

Face serums might seem like fancy skincare magic... But they’re just a lightweight moisturizer. Serums can easily penetrate deeper layers of skin to deliver protective ingredients.

Women are on a constant hunt for the next beauty product that will keep them looking youthful and glowing. (I know I am!) It’s too easy to add more and more products to your routine. So take a look in your makeup bag and in your bathroom -- do you have a natural face serum in there?

When should I use a serum?

You can apply a face serum any time you desire. You can do it in the morning or before going to bed. You can even do it at both time or in the middle of the day.

The ideal time depends on your skin and the other products you’re using. If you use a moisturizer every night, you don’t want to double up with a serum. Applying both will cause your face to feel greasy, and it could cause some irritation.

If you can’t decide on the best time to apply a face serum, switch it up! Try it in the evening for a week, and then in the morning for a week. Then you’ll know which you prefer.

Where can I get the best face serum?

This is somewhat of a trick question. Where you buy isn’t as important as knowing what you’re buying. Focus on the ingredients -- what is and isn’t in it?

If the face serum is touted as the “best one ever” but contains toxins and chemicals, leave it on the shelf. It might do wonderful things for your skin, but later on, your body will pay for it.

Natural ingredients are great -- when you’re not allergic to any of them. If you have an allergy or know your skin reacts to certain things, it’s best to check the label really well. There’s nothing worse than thinking you’re going to help your skin and instead it breaks out.

The most important thing to look for when choosing a serum is natural ingredients. Many of the most popular brands you’ll find will use harmful chemicals. These won’t do you any good. Avoid serums that contain fragrance, parabens, water and synthetic colors.

Look for gentle, organic ingredients like the following:

  • Pomegranate extract

  • Grape seed extract

  • Essential oils

  • Vitamin C

  • Rose water

No two serums are the same. If you start with simple, natural formulas, you’ll quickly learn which ingredients your skin loves. After a few uses, you’ll notice brighter, softer, more youthful looking skin.

Final thoughts

Face serums are your secret weapon to ageless looking skin. Don’t leave them out of your routine! Invest in an all-natural serum now. And enjoy aging gracefully and naturally.
