My skin is my first impression and I wasn’t happy with my complexion for a very long time.
For years I suffered from acne- and by years, …until I was 40! I would get hormonal cystic acne, whiteheads, blackheads and a forest of annoying “bumpy” pimples on my forehead and chin. Life was great- but my face was a disaster….
….until I decided to do something about it!
It was during my first pregnancy I discovered how Big Cosmo was polluting my skincare products with ingredients that could harm not just me, but my growing baby. The more I researched, the more I discovered. Not only are ingredients harmful to my body, but also, most are irritants to my skin. In fact, most of the ingredients that are toxic to my insides, and irritants to my skin, are so caustic, that the people that handle these chemicals must wear protective gear (glove, mask, respirators and full body suits) to protect themselves.
To be specific
Propylene glycol (PG), one of the most common ingredients in commercial skincare, acts as a humectant, preservative or stabilizer and is a known skin irritant, cancer causing agent and allergen.
But for now, forget about the “cancer causing and allergen” and let’s focus on the “skin irritant”. PG is so caustic, not only must protective gear be worn, but also if disposal is needed, it must be buried in the ground.
Now… put that on your skin and continue to ponder why your skin is not radiant, glowing and free from blemishes!
That’s what got me thinking… if most chemicals are skin irritants, could they be irritating, aggravating or even causing my acne?
The answer was YES! Let me first disclose that acne has many, many causes; including diet, hormones, stress, gut health/flora, environmental and topical applicants (irritants). But for many, myself included, skin irritants in commercial skincare was a HUGE factor in my acne. At age 40, with a forest of breakouts presenting my first impression, my diet was clean, stress level controlled, and hormones… fairly balanced.
So, I decided to change the one factor under my control… my skincare. When I ditched the propylene glycol, fragrance, phthalates, and numerous other skin irritants secretly hiding in my lotions, potions and soaps, my acne disappeared, completely for the first time. Sure, I will still get the occasional breakout- but now, it is truly related to diet or hormones.
If you suffer from acne, I’m not saying that changing your skincare will be the answer to your prayers… but, with the plethora of chemicals contained in every soap, toner, moisturizer, treatment, toothpaste, and hair product you use, ditching the chemicals could make a huge difference in your skin, complexion, and body!
By the way, benzoyl peroxide, commonly found in most commercial and prescriptive acne treatments, is a know skin irritant. It was really no surprise that one the primary ingredient I used was a possible cause for my condition. The same holds true for other skin conditions like rosacea, peri-oral dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. These conditions can also be irritated, aggravated or caused by the ingredients in the products we use.
